What causes patios to sink and settle?

Concrete patios sink and settle for various reasons. Poor soil compaction during installation, erosion and other natural factors and poor drainage are often the culprits.
Poor soil compaction during the installation process is one of the most common causes of settling. Soil that is not compacted properly will tend to settle over time, leaving your patio uneven. This sinking and settling can also cause cracks to form, which can be dangerous tripping hazards.
Another reason your patio will sink and settle is erosion and other natural factors. Erosion will wash away the soil under your patio slab over time, leaving voids that cannot support the slab's weight. This will cause it to sink, settle and crack. Other natural factors can include soil shifting and the freeze-thaw cycle. The freeze-thaw/cycle can cause your patio to expand and contract, which can lead to cracks in the surface. Soil shifting, similar to erosion, can leave voids beneath the patio slab and eventually cause your patio to weaken, sink, and possibly crumble.
Poor drainage can also be a factor in causing your concrete patio to sink. If there are areas where water cannot drain away from the area quickly enough, it will pool up beneath the surface and cause it to become saturated with moisture over time. When this happens, it can cause cracks in the concrete or wash away the subgrade and cause the patio slab to sink and settle.
