Why is my driveway sinking and settling?

Your driveway may be sinking and settling for a number of reasons, such as improper drainage, erosion, the freeze/thaw cycle and poor compaction during installation. If you have poor drainage around your driveway, water can pool around it, get underneath and wash away the subgrade. Water can also collect on top and seep into the concrete, which can lead to cracks in the surface. This ties in with erosion, but natural factors like excess rain and wind can also cause erosion.
Another common reason for concrete settlement is caused by the freeze/thaw cycle. When the ground freezes, it expands, and when it thaws, it contracts. This causes the soil below your driveway to move and settle in different places. This creates voids beneath your driveway, which cause it to sink and settle. This can be a slow process, but over time it can lead to cracks and potholes in your driveway.
Your driveway may be sinking because of poor compaction during installation. Compaction is the process of compacting the soil beneath your driveway with heavy equipment, which squeezes out air pockets and compacts the soil into a solid foundation for your driveway. If the soil beneath your driveway is not compacted correctly, it will sink, settle and possibly even collapse over time.
