Why do industrial floor slabs sink and settle?

Industrial floor slabs sink and settle for various reasons. The size of the structure, heavy vehicles and equipment and environmental factors like erosion and the natural freeze/thaw cycle will cause them to sink and settle over time.
The first reason is due to their size. Industrial floor slabs are large and heavy. They are typically installed over concrete footings that are much smaller in size than the slab itself. The weight of the structure sitting on the slab can cause it to sink into the ground as it settles into its surroundings. This is especially true if the surrounding soil contains clay or too much moisture.
The second reason is due to high traffic areas on industrial floors. Heavy vehicles such as forklifts and other machinery will often carry heavy loads on an industrial floor slab that could lead to sinking or settlement over time.
