When concrete slabs are poured, the soil beneath them needs to be compacted so voids don't form below. If the soil isn't compacted correctly when a sidewalk or walkway is installed, it will not be able to support the weight of the concrete slab, and it will eventually sink, settle, crack and create tripping hazards.
